Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your dog’s body can’t produce or use insulin properly. Insulin helps your dog’s body use sugar (glucose) from the food he eats as energy. Without enough insulin, too much glucose builds up in the blood, which can cause serious problems.

Diabetes is one of the most common endocrine diseases in dogs, and it’s estimated that around 2 percent of all dogs have it. The disease affects middle-aged and older dogs most often, but any age or breed can be affected.
