Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, is a disease that affects both humans and animals. Although it’s most common in older dogs and cats, it can happen at any age.

The disease causes the blood vessels to thicken and narrow over time, reducing blood flow to the heart, brain, and other organs. It’s not life-threatening on its own, but atherosclerosis can lead to other serious health problems like heart attack and stroke.

Symptoms of Atherosclerosis in Dogs

Atherosclerosis can affect different parts of your dog’s body — including his heart, brain, and kidneys — so there are many possible signs of this disease.

Common symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
  • Fatigue after exercise
  • Restlessness or anxiety when lying down or standing
  • Fever
