Antiemetics

Antiemetics are drugs used to control vomiting and nausea. They work by blocking the action of certain chemicals such as histamine, which are produced by the body during an allergic reaction. Antiemetics are often prescribed for dogs with vomiting or diarrhea to relieve symptoms, but they can also be used for dogs that have been poisoned by toxins or ingested a harmful substance.

Antiemetics can be taken orally (by mouth) or given intravenously (into a vein). The most common antiemetic drugs are metoclopramide, ondansetron, hydroxyzine, and promethazine. Metoclopramide and ondansetron are prescription medications, while hydroxyzine and promethazine can be purchased over-the-counter (OTC).
