AAFCO

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is an organization that develops and maintains model regulations for the manufacturer, sale, and distribution of animal feeds. These regulations are intended to ensure that animal feeds are safe and effective. The organization also sets guidelines for pet food ingredients, labeling requirements, and nutritional standards.

In 1949, AAFCO was established by a group of state feed control officials. It was originally called the Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC). A year later, it changed its name to the Association of Feed Control Officials (AFCO). In 1973, AFCO became AAFCO with a new mission statement: “to serve as an authoritative source of information concerning animal feeds and their ingredients.”

It’s important to note AAFCO only sets guidelines and they are based on kibble-based food. These are only guidelines, and they are not required to be followed.
