Antihistamines are a class of drugs that are used to treat allergies. Allergies occur when the body reacts in an exaggerated way to substances that are usually harmless. Antihistamines calm down this reaction and relieve allergy symptoms like sneezing, itching, and runny nose. Antihistamines can be bought over-the-counter or prescribed by your vet.

Traditional Antihistamines for Dogs

There are several different types of traditional antihistamines available for dogs:

1) Hyposensitization – This involves giving your dog small doses of the allergen (e.g., pollen) so their immune system becomes used to it and stops reacting so strongly to it. This means you may need to give your dog injections every few weeks for several months in order to build up tolerance to the allergen. Your vet will discuss this option with you if necessary.

2) Corticosteroids – These steroids can be given as tablets or injections under the skin (IM or SC). They work by stopping inflammation in the body, which helps control allergic reactions like itching and inflammation of the nose or eyes (called rhinitis).

Natural Antihistamines for Dogs

Natural antihistamines for dogs are often used to treat allergies caused by pollen, mold spores, dust mites, and other allergens that may trigger an allergic reaction in your dog’s body.

Depending on the type of allergy your dog has, there are different types of natural antihistamines available on the market today. Some work better than others in treating certain types of allergies, so it’s best to do some research before purchasing any over-the-counter medication for your dog’s allergies.
